In this lesson, the presenters emphasize the importance of appropriate language choices in public speaking and that many words and phrases mean different things to different people. Excerpts from speeches by Bob Dole and Pat Buchanan, among others, are analyzed for language choices.

● The reasons the "politically correct" movement and hate speech code adopted by colleges and universities.
● The difference between appropriate and inappropriate language in public speaking.
● A comparison of the impact of the written and spoken word.
●The difference between denotative and connotative meaning, vivid and dull language, abstract and concrete language, and direct and indirect language.
● The deinitions of simile, metaphor, parellelism, expeetition, oversimplification, and hyperbole.
