Management: Listening For Understanding with Psychologist Carl Rogers
Length: 30 Mintues
© University of Mid-America
The tendency to interpret messages from our own point of view can lead to listening without understanding.
This program dramatizes the importance of effective communication, a vital skill for managers.
In a brief dramatic sketch, a communication misunderstanding takes place with serious results. After the sketch, Carl
Rogers points out how the misunderstanding happened--and how it could have been avoided. The scene is
reenacted, and a manager who knows how to listen handles the communication effectively. This program is an
excellent introduction to the idea of “active” emphatic listening. It’s well-suited to follow-up discussion
and further study. Although set in a business environment, the message in this film applies to any setting
where accurate listening skills are needed.
