Discovering a topic is often the most difficult step in speech preparation. This lesson offers strategies for finding a speech topic that fits the occasion, audience and speaker, while looking at ways to narrow the topic for an effective speech. It explores the range of information resources available for effective speech development, including the students’ own experiences and attitudes, interviews with experts and librarians and through internet research.

Also included is a discussion and demonstration of how to use oral footnotes to cite sources in a speech.
