Worlds Of Childhood
Ideal for grades: College / Adult
Duration: 30 minutes
©1992 DLGHS
Focusing on the developmental processes through which human biological nature is expressed in
the contexts of nurture, Worlds of Childhood explores the lives of children growing up
in diverse social, economic and cultural conditions around the world. The series, based on the
acclaimed Public Broadcast series Childhood , breaks new ground by surveying cognitive,
social and physical development within the contexts of culture and history. The series also
examines the ways in which the future may be changed by changing circumstances of children’s
lives.
The series was designed to bring together the work of developmental psychologists,
psycholinguists, historians of childhood and other experts in related fields. The series
considers the cognitive, social, and physical development of children from birth through
puberty. Site experiences from around the world highlight the episodes, featuring children
and their families from Brazil, Japan, Russia, Cameroon and the United States. The twelve
families were filmed over an 18-month period, and their activities commented on by childhood
experts Jerome Kagan, Urie Bronfenbrenner, Robert A. Hinde, Sandra Scarr, Marian Wright Edelman,
and Melvin Konner.
Episodes are presented chronologically to convey a developing story of events in the
families lives, to compare how the same event is treated in different families, and to document
the universal progression of growth in children from prenatal experience through early
adolescence.
Rights granted include: a) life of media audiovisual use, b) public performance,
