Theme: Look closely, sandy shores are teeming with life.

This helpful book explains how waves, sand and pebbles form at the seashore and describes animals, plants and shells which can be seen when the tide goes out.

LeVar uses this feature book when he goes beach- combing in southwestern Florida. There he meets two local naturalists who help him explore plant and animal life (shells, mangroves, oysters, spiny burn fish, scallops, sea stars, etc.) at the shoreline and in the shallows of the gulf.

A CD-ROM is also available for this episode.

Field Trip Segments
Surprises on the shore - LeVar shows us how the shoreline is constantly changed by the wind, sun, and sea. He goes exploring on an island beach and finds seaweed, coral, waves, and animals that live inside shells.
Surprises in the sea - Lisa, a naturalist, shows LeVar the red mangrove trees on the non-beach side of the island. They see an oyster, a sea squirt, and a mangrove crab.
