Theme: Name-Calling / Hurting Others as a Reaction to Being Hurt
Your students will discover that name-calling can start a painful cycle of angry reactions and hurt feelings. They’ll learn positive ways to react to negative behavior.
When some older kids call Cat-a-lion names, he feels humiliated and insecure. He reacts by making fun of Arthur, a new student, and making him cry. Kindly Mrs. Chung shares her childhood experiences of being called names and treated as inferior because she’s Chinese-American. She helps Cat-a-lion understand why taking out his feelings on Arthur was wrong, and how it hurt Arthur.
Activities:Help students develop a greater awareness of and vocabulary for their emotions, with discussion questions, a weather chart for feelings, a list of complimentary phrases, and a piñata full of happy feelings. New pupils will feel welcome with a thoughtful packet of information and supplies your students create.
