Theme: Choosing a Friend Across Racial Lines
Your students will see open discussion as a method of problem resolution, and learn that friendship is based on more than appearance.
In this episode Jason discourages Cat-a-lion from playing baseball with Arthur because he’s “not our kind.” Cat-a-lion feels torn between his friends and seeks advice from Ben, an African-American teen whose best friend, Josh, is white. Ben acknowledges the outside interference he and Josh have had, but tells Cat-a-lion that his choice of friends is just that—his choice. Cat-a-lion tells Arthur and Jason that he wants them all to be friends. Arthur and Jason agree to try.
Activities:Promote friendship with a photo collage, word association games, and an exercise where students compare ice cream likes and dislikes.
