Larger than even the greatest dinosaur, some whales grow to weigh more than 100 tons! However, the whale has been hunted to near extinction. In order to help preserve the whale population, marine biologists study the mammoth creature using mathematics to make estimates of population, migration patterns, and food consumption.

This episode challenges students to:
•Use LORAN to determine the location of whales.
•Use the body weight of a whale to compute total food consumption.
•Compute the area of a whale-watching location used by cruise ships.

Rights granted include: a) life of media audiovisual use, b) public performance, c) campus or building closed circuit and digital/video-on-demand transmission.
